Ellen Keeley, MD, MS, University of Florida, Cardiology Department, will  provide a historical perspective of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and acute ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) by reviewing the data supporting it as the preferred treatment. Additionally, she will review current standards of care and special consideration of particular patient subgroups including those with multi-vessel disease and cardiogenic shock.

 

Learning Objectives:

1. Recall how to diagnose acute ST elevation myocardial infarction and activate the treatment team.
2. Identify data from randomized trials that support primary percutaneous coronary intervention as the preferred therapy for acute ST elevation myocardial infarction.
3. List the standard medications and devices used during primary percutaneous coronary intervention.
4. Distinguish special considerations for subgroups including patients with multi-vessel disease, large thrombus burden, cardiogenic shock, and microvascular dysfunction.
