MRI of Cardiac Function – Online

Dr. Leon Axel, MD, PhD is Professor of Radiology, Medicine, and Neuroscience & Physiology at New York University School of Medicine. An internationally recognized leader in cardiovascular imaging, he has pioneered the development of novel quantitative MRI methods for assessing cardiac structure and function. Dr. Axel earned his B.S. in Physics from Syracuse University, Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Princeton University, and M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, where he also completed his residency and fellowship in radiology. Before joining NYU in 2001, he spent two decades at the University of Pennsylvania, advancing to Professor of Radiology, Biophysics, and Medicine.

His career has been distinguished by sustained NIH funding, numerous patents in MRI technology, and leadership roles in professional societies, including the American College of Radiology, ISMRM, and the American Heart Association. Dr. Axel’s contributions have been recognized with major honors such as the AHA Distinguished Scientist Award and gold medals from both SCMR (2023) and ISMRM (2024). A dedicated mentor and educator, he has trained generations of radiologists and scientists while continuing to shape the field of cardiovascular imaging worldwide.
