This session will provide an in-depth review and comparison of the most current guidelines for the management of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS). Attendees will examine recent literature that supports updated recommendations, particularly in the areas of empiric antibiotic choice, antibiotic duration, and the use of adjunctive systemic corticosteroids for patients with severe CAP. The goal is to enhance clinical decision-making regarding CAP treatment and to address knowledge gaps surrounding antibiotic selection, duration, and corticosteroid use.

Chelsea Huang, PharmD, BCIDP, is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Infectious Diseases at Deborah Heart and Lung Center. Dr. Huang holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Thomas Jefferson University and has completed advanced training in Infectious Diseases through a PGY2 residency. She is board-certified in Infectious Diseases and serves as co-chair of several institutional committees related to infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship. Dr. Huang is actively involved in the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists and has presented numerous educational sessions on antimicrobial management.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Select the most appropriate antibiotic therapy for treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) based on severity and risk factors.
  2. Prescribe the optimal duration of antibiotic therapy for the treatment of CAP.
  3. Determine appropriateness of adjunctive systemic corticosteroid use in the management of patients with severe CAP.
